Continuation on the Methods for discovering purpose.
In part 5 of this series, we looked at the method of discovering purpose by examining your gifts, talent or potentials; collectively called your natural abilities. In this 6th part we shall be looking at 3 other methods among the 10 methods of discovering purpose.
(2nd method): Study Your Loves, Hobbies, And Passion.
What keeps you up with excitement at night, what do you love talking about, thinking about, and singing about, what makes you cry? What is the deep desire set in your heart, the thing that sets your soul on fire? When you identify what makes you cry, and what sets your soul on fire, and you tap into those, you begin to understand your reason for existence; your life’s purpose.
The only thing that has always filled my heart and kept me up with so much excitement at night that I couldn't sleep was the desire to do personal research that would enable me in having adequate resources for speaking and impacting the lives of others.
Also consider this: Assuming all your needs are automatically paid for you each day and money wasn’t a problem, what would you love to be doing all the remaining days of your life?
Mike Murdock believes love is a radar that helps us to detect our gifts and our gifts are what helps us to detect our life’s purpose he also said “What we love can reveal the gift we contain and what God has given us capacity to become. God gives us gifts to enable us fulfill or carry out our life’s purpose and assignment.”
If you love writing that’s a clue to the fact that you possess the potential inside you that will enable you become a great writer who can become a great author or secretary or other careers that require that gift.
If you love reading or research it’s a clue to the fact that you possess capacity to become a writer. The reason is because a writer most have ample wealth of knowledge to be able to effectively persuade and impact readers. You write to instruct and you read to know what instruction to pass across
If you love singing that’s a clue to the fact that you possess the gift inside you that would enable you to become a great singer who can touch lives by singing quality music. You can also pioneer great music studio, instrument shop or school.
If you love to dance it shows you have the potential inside you to become a great dancer and entertainer who can pioneer a great entertainment firm/band where you develop young men and women who would dance to entertain various kinds of audiences; where also you train interested upcoming artist in dancing.
If you love drawing that’s a clue to the fact that you can become a great artist who draws or paints breathe taking works or pieces.
If you love to dream and imagine things in an unknown world that’s a clue to the fact that you can become a great leader, script writer or movie maker or director, architect or graphic designer who creates and builds mind boggling works. As a leader you build big organizations, as a movie director or script writer you create wonderful movies, dramas or plays. As An architect you design big buildings, bridges and structures etc.
If you love sports be it football, basketball, table tennis, lawn tennis, lawn tennis, volley ball etc. It’s a clue to the fact that you have the potential to function in the sports you have interest in and with hard work and determination you become a great sports star. You can start a club or team or even pioneer your own your league.
3rd Method: Study Your Hates
Mike Murdock said: “what you hate can be a clue to what you were born to heal”.
For example do you hate: Injustice, drug abuse, rape, child abuse, bureaucracy, nepotism, corruption, child trafficking etc. Names such as Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, and Martin Luther King Junior all came to limelight because they hated and fought against such injustices as segregation, slavery, racism etc.
We also have late Dr, Dora Akunyili who fought against importation of fake/substandard foods and drugs as then head of National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Nigeria.
4th method: Study What You Have Suffered and Conquered.
This point is very similar to the point 3 above on what you hate. What you have suffered can be a clue to the problem God has wired you to solve. People who have suffered from and overcame poverty, unwanted pregnancy, child abuse etc. naturally develop passion for helping others in either avoiding such problems or helping victims out of such problems. They go on start or support various humanitarian causes/services like building schools and offering scholarship, starting orphanages, motherless baby homes for caring for poor widows, orphans, homeless, motherless and many other ailing or destitute groups of people.
Example: Martin Luther King Junior, who haven suffered segregation in America as a black American was inspired and motivated to fight for the freedom of black Americans in USA and this brought him to limelight. The question here you will want to answer is:
What problem(s) have you suffered that you are ready to develop yourself and free yourself and others from?
What have you overcome in life that you want to help others overcome? Is it habits such as smoking, excessive drinking of alcohol, taking cocaine, stealing, marijuana, heroin, and abuse of other dangerous drugs, etc.?
Doing any of these can become a life’s purpose, assignment or calling for you.
