Understanding Your Free Resources for Purpose Fulfilment Part 3

Your 2nd free resources

Free Resources in your family house e.g. the space inside the compound, the electrical appliances you have access to using, the chairs and benches, the buckets and bowls, etc. I mean whatever in the family house you could use to your benefit when they are not in use by other members of the family that could help you kick start your vision.

For example, I remember the period in early January of 2020 shortly before lockdown of COVID-19. when I returned from youth service and was unemployed and decided to continue the dry cleaning business I started shortly before rounding up youth service at Lafia, Nasarawa state where I served. When I discovered that all I had among the things required for commencing the business at Abuja where my family house was located, was only the small Phillip pressing iron I returned with, and I also had no shop. I decided to look around the house for what was not in use I could use to my advantage, and sure enough I found them, a long panel of wood normally found inside bed furniture for raising the height of mattress that I planned to convert to table by adding taller legs to it, big bows in the house normally used for washing and storing water I could use for washing when they were not in use, electricity line I could use for almost free, tap water I could use for almost free too. I then got a carpenter and with the long wood panel and one or two extra lengths of 2×3 wood the carpenter made ready the ironing table I needed. I decided I will use the front of our house and inside my room as shop. So in other words I was ready for dry cleaning business. What I needed next was customers. I then got a Graphics-designer who designed complementary card, flyer for marketing, and banner to be used as signboard for my business place/shop (a part of our family house). With my business cards and flyers on hand, I went doing marketing very early on a Saturday morning around 6:45 Am. I went to the estates close to my family house, knocking from door to door telling the estate occupants about my services and requesting that they patronize me. The same day I got two customers who in their own words said they wanted to try or test my services. I did their work promptly and returned the clothes to them in their houses in the estate. That's how my customers continued to grow and because my cost was low due to the fact that I didn’t pay rent, buy water or pay electricity bills. Most of the washing fees were pure profits for me. I was able to support himself and my family – my mum and sister at the time. The end of my story.

I shared this story with a university graduate from FUT-Minna (-the school I graduated from and who is currently an executive of my institute.) This graduate got inspired by the story of how I started my own laundry business and he too in less than 2 weeks commenced his own dry cleaning business from his family house and has been doing well ever since. Told me in his words "And all these things were there before oh"

In conclusion do not wait to have everything, look around your family house for what you can start with.

Always bear in mind that “how you start is not as important as whether you start” and Eleanor Roosevelt words are as you can remember start to “do whatever you can, with whatever you have, where you are.”
